A Day in the Life with Iron Deficiency (And How I Finally Did Something About It)
A Day in the Life with Iron Deficiency (And How I Finally Did Something About It)

My alarm goes off at 7:15 a.m.
I hit snooze. Then again. Then one more time — because I am exhausted in a way that no amount of sleep seems to fix. I lay there for a few extra minutes staring at the ceiling, mentally bargaining with myself to get up. My legs feel heavy. My head feels foggy. I have a full day ahead of me and I already feel like I'm running on empty.
This was my life for almost a year before I figured out what was wrong.
The Morning Struggle
I finally drag myself out of bed and into the kitchen. Coffee. I need coffee. I'm not even someone who particularly loves coffee — I just need it to feel like a functioning human being. I pour myself a cup, skip breakfast because I'm already running late, and start my day feeling like I'm operating at about 60% capacity.
At work, I'm sitting at my desk by 9, and by 10:30 I'm already fighting the urge to rest my head on my keyboard. People around me seem... fine? Normal? Where is their energy coming from? I'm getting the same 7–8 hours of sleep I always have. I eat reasonably well. I exercise — or I try to, anyway. Lately I've been skipping gym sessions because I just don't have anything left in the tank.
I mention to a coworker that I've been exhausted lately. She asks if I've had my iron checked.
Iron? I hadn't even thought about that.
The Realization
I made a doctor's appointment. The blood work came back: my ferritin levels — the protein that stores iron in the body — were low. Not catastrophically, dangerously low, but low enough to explain everything. The fatigue. The brain fog. The fact that I was always cold when everyone else seemed comfortable. The occasional dizziness when I stood up too fast. The headaches I'd been writing off as stress.
Iron deficiency. That was it.
My doctor suggested iron supplementation and gave me a list of dietary recommendations. I started Googling iron supplements that night and immediately felt overwhelmed. Pills. Liquids. Gummies. Powders. The reviews were all over the place — half of them mentioned stomach problems, constipation, or a metallic taste that made people gag.
Great.
Trying (And Failing) the Old Way
I tried a traditional iron tablet first. It was fine, I guess, in the sense that I took it every morning and then spent the rest of the morning feeling vaguely nauseous. My stomach was constantly uncomfortable. I'd take it and then sit at my desk hoping the queasiness would pass before my first meeting. And the constipation — yeah. We don't need to dwell on that.
After a couple of weeks I was taking the pill every other day instead of every day, because I just couldn't face the stomach stuff. Which, as it turns out, is exactly the wrong approach.
I knew I needed to find something I could actually stick to. Something that fit into my routine without making me feel worse in other ways.
Discovering Iron Strips
A friend mentioned she'd been using dissolvable strips for her vitamins and loved them. I did some digging and found Mavi Iron Strips — fast-absorbing oral strips that dissolve right on your tongue. The idea is that the iron absorbs through the lining of your mouth instead of making a full trip through your stomach and digestive tract. That's why they don't cause the nausea and constipation that traditional iron pills are notorious for.
I was skeptical but willing to try anything at that point.
The first morning, I peeled one out of the tin, placed it on my tongue, and let it dissolve. It was... quick. And easy. No water needed. No swallowing a giant capsule. No choking it down and hoping for the best. It was just gone in seconds, and I went about my morning.
No nausea. No stomach issues. Nothing unpleasant at all.
I actually remembered to take it every single day — because there was no reason not to.
A Day in My Life Now
My alarm still goes off at 7:15. But these days, I get up on the first ring.
I'm in the kitchen making breakfast — something I actually have the energy to do now. I peel open a Mavi Iron Strip and let it dissolve while I wait for my eggs. It takes about 10 seconds. Then I eat, and I'm out the door.
By 10:30 a.m. I'm still going. By lunch I'm not counting down the hours until I can go home and collapse. I started going back to the gym. I'm sleeping the same amount but waking up actually rested — what a concept.
The brain fog has lifted in a way I didn't fully appreciate until it was gone. I can sit in a meeting and follow the entire conversation without losing the thread halfway through. I can write. I can think. I can focus.
It sounds dramatic to say that an iron supplement changed my day-to-day life, but here's the thing: when something foundational is off — when your body literally can't carry oxygen efficiently — everything suffers. Your energy. Your mood. Your ability to be present. And when you fix it? Everything gets better. Quietly, noticeably, reliably better.
What I Wish I'd Known Sooner
If any of this sounds familiar — the relentless fatigue, the cold hands, the brain fog, the feeling of running on a half-empty tank — it's worth getting your iron and ferritin levels checked. It's a simple blood test and it can change a lot.
And if you do need to supplement, please don't assume pills are your only option. There are smarter ways to do it. Mavi Iron Strips are vegan, sugar-free, made with clean ingredients, and — most importantly — they're something I can actually commit to every single day without dreading it.
That consistency is everything when it comes to correcting a deficiency.
Don't wait as long as I did.
